The World's Canal "Circle of Friends"

Original Post

Reposted from Grand Canal Communication: This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Grand Canal’s World Heritage status. Over the past decade, Yangzhou has led efforts in promoting the canal's cultural value and global influence. We are excited to share the launch of the "World Canal 'Circle of Friends'" series, which will showcase the inspiring stories of individuals shaping the international success of this ancient waterway.

In the East of the world, there is an ancient canal that has witnessed China’s civilization and prosperity for thousands of years. In the blue waves of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives islands are dotted across the sea like pearls. Though the Maldives doesn’t have a canal, former Maldivian Ambassador to China, Mohamed Rasheed, sees similarities between the Maldives' lifestyle and China’s canal cities, where the sea and waterways are integral to daily life and culture.

Recently, Mohamed Rasheed visited Yangzhou, a canal city in China, to explore collaboration on cultural and vocational education exchanges between the Maldives and China. During his visit, Rasheed emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the two countries and the significant role of vocational education in fostering China-Maldives cooperation.

Rasheed, who founded the China-Maldives Cultural Exchange Association, has long advocated for promoting Chinese culture in the Maldives, with a focus on helping the next generation understand China's rich heritage. He envisions a future where 20% of the Maldivian population speaks Chinese, fostering closer connections between the two nations. Rasheed is also committed to environmental protection, emphasizing the importance of global cooperation to address the challenges of climate change, particularly for island nations like the Maldives.
