CMCA Activities Update January 01st to June 30th, 2020

CMCA sent a Maldivian Youth Delegation comprising of 12 university students to Beijing and Xi’an. This the annual flagship program of CMCA. A part of the program in Beijing was coordinated by BPAFFC, and the program in Xi’an was coordinated by Shaanxi Han Tang Cultural Creative Institute.

Two students from Maldives National University were sent to Beijing to observe Chinese New Year (Spring Festival 2020). BPAFFC arranged host families for the participants. 

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the visit was curtailed and they retuned to Maldives on January 31st, 2020. The two participants went into self-quarantine for 14 days.

CMCA has five students, two girls and 3 boys studying at Yangzhou Polytechnic College, majoring in News and Media Studies, Information Technology and Tourism Management.

Mr Indrananda Abysekera, President of Association for Sri Lanka China Social and Cultural Cooperation and Mr Mohamed Rasheed met in Colombo on

February 2020, to discuss how to strengthen the Tai-Chi Training School in Kandy   Due to Covid pandemic, following activities of CMCA planned for the first half of 2020 were cancelled/postponed:

  1. Chinese Spring Festival Cultural Festival
  2. South and South-East Asia BRI Expert Group Forum
  3. Culinary Exchange Program with Sichuan Friendship Association (SIFA)
  4. Visi of Suzhou Teacher Delegation to Maldives

Covid-19 Status and Lockdown in Maldives

  1. Maldives suspended all flights from China on February 01st, 2020
  2. In February CMCA sent “Solidarity Letters” to CPAFFC, BPAFFC, SIFA, CCPIT-Sichuan, Suzhou FAO
  3. Some special flights were arranged to repatriate the Chinese tourists in Maldives
  4. First Covid positive case in was found on March 7th, two foreigners.
  5. First local cluster was identified on April 15th, 2020
  6. Maldives imposed lockdown in the capital city Male’ and several other islands
  7. Covid-19 Outbreak in Maldives, status on June 30th , 2020

Total confirmed cases: 2361

Number of Locals: 831

Number of Expatriates: 1530

Number of cases recovered: 1944

Number of deaths: 09

  • Local: 06 (above the age of 80 years old)
  • Expatriates: 03

Assistance from China

  1. On March 27th, Maldives received the first batch of relief materials from China which included much needed epidemic prevention materials. A subsequent special charter flight was arranged in May which was jointly arranged with SOEs operating in Maldives who all contributed to the cargo. Significant donations were made to various government agencies and private health institutions
  2. China has continued to provide technical assistance by providing an opportunity for senior health ministry officials and senior doctors in the country to have meetings and seminars via teleconference with senior health officials and frontline experts on how the covid emergency was managed at major medical centers such as those in Wuhan and Beijing, China.
  3. BPAFFC and CMCA also had a seminar arranged with notable respiratory physicians and MMA (Maldives Medical Association), information and current treatment protocols were discussed.

Webinar with Members of Organization of South Asian Regional Friendship Cooperation with China (OSARFCC)

Two online virtual meetings were held among the members OSARFCC

On June 01st, 2020 Forum members from Bangladesh-China Cultural, Economic & Mass Communication Center, India-China Friendship, Association, China-Maldivian Cultural, Association, Nepal-China Executive, Council and Association for Sri Lanka, China Social and Cultural Cooperation participated.  

On June 14th , 2020 Forum members from Bangladesh-China Cultural, Economic & Mass Communication Center, India-China Friendship Association, China-Maldivian Cultural Association, Nepal-China Executive Council, All Pakistan China Friendship Association and Association for Sri Lanka China Social and Cultural Cooperation participated.  

The two Webinar Forums were moderated by Mr Anoop Bhatarrai, President of OSARFFC.

Mr Mohamed Rasheed participated in the two Forums representing China-Maldivian Cultural Association. During the deliberations, Mr Rasheed highlighted the following:

  1. The importance of a strong media/publicity campaign to promote the lessons learnt about Covid-19 Pandemic in China.
  2. Enhancing dialogue with Chinese SOEs (State Owned Enterprises) in respective countries for more support to the grassroots (disbursement Cooperate Social Responsibilities through local charities).
  3. More resources from China to Non-governmental Organizations in OSARFCC countries.
  4. Sustainable partnerships.
