Chinese Government Scholarship: Q&A on Bilateral Projects

The Chinese Government Scholarship offers various program categories. Today, we will provide detailed answers to frequently asked questions about the Bilateral Programs under the Chinese Government Scholarship.

What are bilateral projects?

The Chinese Government Scholarship Bilateral Program is a scholarship initiative established through cooperation and exchange agreements or mutual understandings between China and the governments or institutions of participating countries.

Which international students are funded by the program?

Country-specific programs under the Chinese Government Scholarship can admit students across five categories: undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, general, and senior students. For specific details, please contact the designated sending institutions.

Does the program have any language proficiency requirements for me?

For applicants to programs taught in Chinese, the following Chinese proficiency requirements generally apply:

  • Bachelor’s degree applicants, general students (excluding those majoring in Chinese language), and senior students: A minimum proficiency of HSK Level 3.
  • Master’s and doctoral degree applicants: A minimum proficiency of HSK Level 4.

These requirements serve as general guidelines and may vary depending on the specific program.

You can visit https://www.campuschina.org/ to search for schools and majors. By selecting a Chinese institution of interest, you can view detailed information about the teaching language for each program.

Applicants applying for programs taught in a foreign language must meet the language proficiency requirements specified by the institution they are applying to.

How long is the funding period?

In principle, the duration of the academic program aligns with the standard length of study for the chosen degree. If your admission includes a Chinese foundation program or language tutoring, the scholarship typically covers an additional year for this preparatory phase.

Can I apply for this program at any institution?

Over 300 Chinese institutions of higher education are designated to train students under the Chinese Government Scholarship program. These institutions offer a wide range of majors, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and the arts.

Is there an application deadline for the project?

The application period typically runs from autumn to around March of the following year. Applicants are advised to verify the specific application deadlines for their country with the designated sending agency.

What are the application requirements for the project?

  1. The applicant must be a non-Chinese citizen and in good health.
  2. Applicants must meet the educational and age requirements specified by the program.
  3. Applicants must meet the language proficiency requirements set by the institution to which they are applying.
  4. Applicants must meet the academic and other relevant admission requirements set by the institutions to which they are applying.
